There is a MySQL 5.5 replica set up.
(And regular snapshots on filesystem underneath, to go 'back in time' if needed)

I have been told (but can't remember details now) that MariaDB SQL isn't always backward compatable with MySQL SQL. It probably will be fine, but don't assume that without good testing. There is at least one legacy closed source project I am involved with that is stuck with MySQL because of such breakage. -- Brian May @ Linux Penguins
