Hi guys, I have 4 or 5 33Kb Maestro dial-up modems curently destined for the next hard rubbish collection. I think at least one was upgraded to 56Kb. Can anyone suggest a better home / charity / recycling outfit for these? Cheers ... Duncan. -- Please avoid sending me Word or PowerPoint attachments. Bring them to the next LUV meeting, I expec that someone will want some. Also I'll take one for the LUV hardware library. -- My Main Blog http://etbe.coker.com.au/ My Documents Blog http://doc.coker.com.au/

Hi Duncan, Internal or external modems? With or without manuals? I might like two of them, actually. Carl Turney Bayswater p.s. Anyone got any old =acoustic= modems out there? p.p.s. Anyone ever set up RADIO modems, and used them on a ham or CB rig? p.p.p.s. Anyone ever set up a Wok-Fi? (Using a parallel dish (e.g. a wok) to extend the range of an external WiFi adapter.) I haven't seen one of those for nearly 20 years!

Yeah, heaps of times, and heaps of modes - packet radio, slow data modes, email over radio (WINMOR), and even digital voice. :) Oh, and Linux has soundcard based modems for packet radio, though the kernel modules are not always compiled in off the shelf distros. An aside, using such a setup on CB is illegal under the current class licence. Ham radio as long as you have a Standard or Advanced licence, have fun! :) Not a lot of packet radio in use these days, except for APRS. The other data modes can be interesting and useful.

Think you mean parabolic dish - I've done it with commercially available antennas and ex Galaxy TV gridpacks. 73 de VK3JED / VK3IRL http://vkradio.com

Oops, yep, meant parabolic. Too early in the morning for me. Will contact you (Tony) off-list in a few days, for some of those things. Cheers, Carl

I've used software modems on amateur radio to transmit slowish data - namely psk31. would be happy to help you with this sort of thing if you're interested

that's a really poor idea. woks are generally made of steel and have way too large an impedance to work with RF. plus they're not actually electrically parabolic. a foil or mesh corner reflector made to the proper dimensions will perform this role much better. or, just buy an actual high gain and/or directional antenna :) regards Hannah

Ask around, I'm sure there's still a heap of old Galaxy gridpacks gathering dust somewhere, which are easily converted to WiFi use. I have a couple that I've used from time to time. :) 73 de VK3JED / VK3IRL http://vkradio.com

Now you mention it, I do have one internal - prolly only 28Kb. ISA bus - any use?
With or without manuals?
As it came - 1 double-sided A4 page directing you to the web site for the full manual (I don't think it's there any more - had a look). Cheers ... Duncan.

I will be bringing my collection of modems with me tonight. Look for me around the {hardware,} library during the break. There are 4 external modems with 3 power supplies. I also have a single internal modem (ISA). If I have to take any home they will go in hard rubbish, Cheers ... Duncan. On Wed, Jan 09, 2013 at 07:37:06PM +1100, Duncan Roe wrote:
