What's a good place in the central city area to get a phone repaired? The glass on my Note3 has cracked. I just need new glass the screen itself seems ok. -- Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Note 3 with K-9 Mail.

That should be relatively easy at one of those shopping centre phone repair places (Melbourne Central?) Cheers D On 28/04/16 16:08, Russell Coker via luv-talk wrote:

Russell: Not sure it's a reliable source but Telstra support (Exhibition Street )sent me to: "Happy Mobile 247 Lonsdale Street 96634180 " when an " excessively enthusiastic" use of "Kingroot"; put the phone beyond 'factory reset'; they fixed the phone for $50 !

http://www.shoppingsquare.com.au/category.php?id=1246&o=a&s=2 Thanks for the suggestion. They quoted me $149, the phone originally cost $550 including postage in 2014. The Note 4 costs $550 + postage now from Shopping Square and a new Note 3 is on ebay with a buy it now price of $380 with free postage. It seems like bad value to pay 40% of the price of a new Note 3 or 25% the price of a Note 4 to fix my old phone (which is a little worn and has some other minor issues). I'd rather spend a bit more and have a better phone and give my old phone to one of my relatives who doesn't mind having a cracked screen. Samsung seems to release a new phone in each series every year, so there's probably only a few months until the Note 6 is released. I can wait that long and get a really cheap Note 4 or a moderately cheap Note 5. -- My Main Blog http://etbe.coker.com.au/ My Documents Blog http://doc.coker.com.au/

Thanks for the suggestion. They quoted me $149,
As a matter of interest were they the cheapest ?

Or ~ $300 second hand on gumtree! http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-electronics-computer/melbourne/samsung+note+3/k0...

Or just sell it ; if you can spare the time ? regards Rohan McLeod

I haven't got other quotes.

Selling it is a PITA and probably won't give an amount of money that makes it a better option than giving it to a relative. -- My Main Blog http://etbe.coker.com.au/ My Documents Blog http://doc.coker.com.au/

sadly, that's pretty much the mobile phone business model. make something attractively light and yet incredibly fragile, which inevitably breaks, forcing you to upgrade. consumers somehow think this is normal, maybe inevitable, and possibly even desirable. manufacturers are probably happy that the limited half-life means they don't have to do android support for long. it's win-win for them. it's entirely feasible to make a very robust and light phone, but manufacturers don't - where are the crumple zones, carbon chassis, rubberised screen mounts? I made a case for my 6.44" sony z1 ultra that I can drive over, so broken phones is not a problem I'm going to encounter. lack of updates is... cheers, robin

Yes, when Gorilla glass gets stronger, the phone makers just use a thinner layer so we lose the benefit of any extra strength. :(

I would love to see that case! btw any phone from FleaBay or Gumtree is going to have some extra risks; unless you can 100% for sure do a factory reset, it is suspect. And even if you can do a full factory reset, there is also the risk of counterfeit product as well as product not properly approved for use in AU, fwiw. Cheers A.

I don't think rapid EOLs are because of product fragility. I think it's because consumers don't give a shit about security. See also http://androidvulnerabilities.org/ (TL;DR: if you own a smartphone, YOU LOSE.)

Yes, it totally annoys me that we are told to make sure we have the latest updates for security.... but it is often impossible to get official updates even when they that are relatively new. Surprised that Nexus is so bad, is that Nexus overall? I would have thought the figure would be a lot better for a current Nexus model. Cheers A,

$ w3m -dump http://androidvulnerabilities.org/ | grep Nexus Nexus devices 5.76 (best) $ w3m -dump http://androidvulnerabilities.org/scores | grep Nexus Scores out of 10 for manufacturers and for Nexus devices Nexus devices 5.76 (best) Galaxy Nexus 4.74 (best) Nexus 5 4.6 Nexus 4 4.3 Nexus 7 3.64 The current Nexus actually has a *lower* score than the score for Nexuses in general -- I guess that means that brand's security record is trending downwards.

From memory they had Samsung repairs on their website, but now it just says "phone for other brands". MELBOURNE CBD (03) 9077 0411 ADDRESS: LEVEL2 34-36 BLOCK PLACE MELBOURNE, VIC 3000 TRADING HOURS: MON-FRI: 10:00-18:00 SAT: CLOSED SUN: CLOSED Public Holiday: CLOSED
