Unable to install Linux (Debian, Ubuntu and Mint) on to laptop

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi all, I have tried to get the installation process for each of the three distros mentioned in the subject to install on to my Laptop. Ubunutu and Mint both fail when trying to modprobe hardware just after detecting the hard drives. Debian (using the NetInst 6.0.4 CD) gets in to the installer but can't detect either the GigE network card nor then Wifi card that are in my laptop. The GigE card is an Atheros AR8151 NIC. I've googled for suggestions, it appears that the 'atl1c' and/or 'atl1e' driver should do it, but the version of both included on the Debian install CD doesn't help the installer detect the NIC. I've not yet started on trying to figure out the WiFi card, as I was hoping to get the NIC working, install Linux and then build a custom kernel with the WiFi driver I need. The Debian NetInst CD runs kernel 2.6.32, but does offer me the option of installing modules off removable media. What I don't know is what files, file names, and the like I'd need to have on a USB memory stick to do that. And then I'd also need to actually get the required files. The Atheros NIC uses VENDOR ID: 1969 and DEVICE ID: 1083. I am tempted to install Virtualbox on to my laptop, install Linux in there, and then build a custom kernel with the correct drivers, but I would prefer to avoid that if possible. Can anyone assist me, by providing a link to the appropriate files, so that I can put them on to a USB memory stick and get Debian on to my laptop? Alternatively, advise on other Linux distro's installers which DO support the AR8151 would be appreciated. I would prefer to stick to the Debian family. You could try booting a live CD such as http://www.grml.org/ (which is worth having in any case). If it detects your network hardware, you can use it to install Debian. Debootstrap can be used for this purpose, but as I recall, grml (and possibly other live distributions) offer scripts to automate this process. Another option would be a Debian testing installer image.

Unfortunately, without spending a while tweaking boot options, GRML seems to be a fail. It's sticking on the nVidia GeForce GT 555M that's part of this laptop. Modprobe fails and hangs the rest of the boot process. I am prepared to go as far as Gentoo, to get Linux on to this Laptop, but as state previously, would prefer to stick to Debian. Hi Tim, I take it that you had tried booting up Ubuntu 11.10 Live CD on your laptop, and it wouldn't recognise your NIC? Could it boot successfully? Wen On Sun, Mar 25, 2012 at 9:38 PM, Tim Lyth <tcl@tcl.homedns.org> wrote:

ubuntu 12.04 ("Precise Pangolin", or the next LTS release) would probably be fine too - the daily build EC2 image i booted on Saturday had kernel linux-image-3.2.0-19-virtual 3.2.0-19.31 this is assuming that the non-EC2 installer also has a 3.2.0 kernel. if not, it'll probably have the same problem as squeeze. craig -- craig sanders <cas@taz.net.au> BOFH excuse #448: vi needs to be upgraded to vii

The GigE card is an Atheros AR8151 NIC. I've googled for suggestions,
i had a very similar problem installing debian on an acer aspire d257 back in early Feb. it might have even been the same NIC, can't remember... i ended up updating the kernel and initrd in my pxeboot setup (in /tftp/di) with kernel version 3.2.0-1 and all the non-free firmware with: cd /tftp/di/sid/amd64 mkdir orig mv linux initrd.gz orig cp -af /boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-1-amd64 ./linux mkdir initrd cd initrd zcat ../orig/initrd.gz | cpio -i --no-absolute-filenames cp -af /lib/modules/3.2.0-1-amd64/ lib/modules/ cp -af /lib/firmware/ lib/ find . | cpio -o -H newc | gzip -c > ../initrd.gz (this worked because I installed the appropriate non-free firmware packages onto my server, so the files were in /lib/firmware to be copied) i later discovered that there is alternative debian installer with all the excluded firmware, but I can't seem to find it again this morning. i did find a page documenting a similar approach to what I used: http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/NetbootFirmware cool - this tells me i didn't need to unpack the initrd with cpio, I could have just made a new cpio archive with the firmware and /lib/modules, and then appended that to the original initrd.
I am tempted to install Virtualbox on to my laptop, install Linux in there, and then build a custom kernel with the correct drivers, but I would prefer to avoid that if possible.
another alternative would be to buy a cheap, known to be supported in Squeeze USB NIC and install with that. then upgrade to a later kernel from sid or wheezy, and install the required firmware package for the built-in nic. craig -- craig sanders <cas@taz.net.au> BOFH excuse #267: The UPS is on strike.

So, install something newer than Debian stable, e.g.
http://cdimage.debian.org/debian/dists/testing/main/installer-amd64/current/...
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise/main/installer-amd64/current/...

And that has led me to the path, and I've started to walk it. :) I didn't go for either of those two, or the USB versions. Instead I went for http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest/amd64/iso-c... It detected both the AR8151 and my wifi NIC, and asked me where to get the non-free firmware for the WiFi NIC from. I have got Linux installed, and confirmed that I can still get in to Windows via Grub. At this moment in time (~21:40 WST) I only have the base install done. I will leave the GUI until tomorrow when I should be both able to spare more time and be a LOT less tired. So now the journey proceeds forward, back to using Linux as my primary OS (at least while I'm not at work...)
