I take it that you had tried booting up Ubuntu 11.10 Live CD on your laptop, and it wouldn't recognise your NIC? Could it boot successfully?

seems to be a fail. It's sticking on the nVidia GeForce GT 555M
that's part of this laptop. Modprobe fails and hangs the rest of the
boot process.
I am prepared to go as far as Gentoo, to get Linux on to this Laptop,
but as state previously, would prefer to stick to Debian.
