Basically if you are comfortable in having a Google account then there is utterly nothing stopping you having cross platform bliss using Hangouts.
Pick your poison: non-FOSS and expensive TeamViewer or privacy-invading Google Hangouts. Thanks for your feedback Daniel, Lev, Trent, Erik and Piers. Much appreciated. I will give Hangouts a crack, but suspect there is a good chance that I will stumble across issues with Iceweasel or Firefox on Debian Jessie soon (from what I read so far on this matter). Let's see.
