Anne, thanks so much. I suspected the proxy may have had something to do with it, but was certain I had entered proxy info correctly having read & reread the page you link to. Seems the issue was with the proxy host resolving as swapping out the url for the ip has solved the issue. Once again, thanks. I doubt it will be anything to do with 64 vs 32 bit. I am running both, on different machines of course.
Could be a python library version incompatibility, but the error message you quoted doesn't make that likely.

Again SpiderOak fails with the same error message, both with the GUI and at the commandline.
For the record, I have another machine at home with a fresh LMDE (32bit) install that I installed SpiderOak on with no issues last evening. The differences between the machines that I can see are the age of the installs (this one is over 12 months old), the architectures (one 32bit one 64bit), and the fact that the machine here at the university uses a web proxy to access the internet.
I guess the next thing to try may be to force an install of the 32bit deb to rule out the package, though I'd really rather not do that.

- make sure your squeeze install is up to date. An old python might cause problems, though I admit this is unlikely
- login to the SpiderOak web site, and make sure your account appears to be registered and active
- uninstall (aptitude --purge, or similar), delete any .SpiderOak directory under your home directory, then install and try again. It is possible for the db in .SpiderOak to get corrupt.
- see if you have a .SpiderOak directory in your home directory. If so, look for files with names matching spideroak*.log. Look at the newest one, and see if it gives any more useful information. It might show how far the process got before it died, or might have a warning message that pinpoints the cause
- if you are comfortable enough on the command line, uninstall (again!), delete any .SpiderOak directory, install using dpkg, then configure from the command line following instructions at

It might not work, but at least you'll get a better idea of which step is failing
I have SpiderOak running on several machines. On most the install and config were straight forward, but a couple caused me problems for some unknown reason. Trying the sorts of things listed above got them working, after which the software mostly worked well.

Look like I provided only part of my footnote there. I've downloaded the Spideroak client as a 64 bit deb direct from their website (https://spideroak.com/opendownload/) which shows as ver 9948.
The client starts correctly however when I enter my login credentials it crashes with the above error. The same behaviour occurs from both the gui and command line.
