my phone only rings about 3 times before diverting to voicemail, so if (as is usual) my phone is in another room plugged in to the charger, it gets diverted to voicemail just as i'm picking it up to answer it. this is very annoying. anyone know of an android app that works like an old fashioned land-line answering machine, i.e. 1. answers the call after X rings 2. plays a short message, that I can record like "leave a message after the beep" 3. starts recording, saving to sdcard AND playing on the phone's speaker and, most importantly: 4. allows me to pick up the call during the recording. i don't really care if it continues to record the conversation from this point or not. a search on the google play store for 'call screening' or 'answering machine' just gets a shitload of garbage. craig -- craig sanders <cas@taz.net.au>

No idea about the app, but if you're using your phone providers voicemail facility, you can normally change the number of rings/seconds before diverting to voicemail - see this Wikipedia article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Call_forwarding#Mobile_.28cell.29_phones I am on Telstra, and I can change the diversion time to 30secs by doing **61*101**30#

thanks, i'll try this. i've got an iinet mobile, so that would be: **61*321**30# BTW, iinet's help page mentions both their web-based toolkit and **61* as methods to change the diversion number, but neglect to mention any method of changing the number of rings / diversion time: https://iihelp.iinet.net.au/Mobile_Voice_-_Features#toc_5 craig -- craig sanders <cas@taz.net.au>

They give that method at the bottom of this page https://iihelp.iinet.net.au/support/node/4895 I needed to do the same a little while ago. Nic -- Sent from my Android device with K-9 Mail. Please excuse my brevity.

OOC, do you issue this as an AT command, or what? The cellphones I've seen lately require you to type the number *then* hit dial, --- do you just type in the above sequence and then "call" the command?

Yes, just type in the above sequence then hit the call button. I had to do this recently on my new Galaxy S6 that work has supplied. You get an on screen message saying "MMI code started" followed by "Call forwarding when no reply Registration was successful". -- Colin Fee tfeccles@gmail.com

Well one could ask why is such technology (an answering machine) not built into the hard ware; answer : because voicemail is a nice little earner, which suggests that mobile phones will not be designed to allow, the easy implementation of 'an answering-machine app' further rant/ 'rational- producer/ retailers are interested in selling rational-consumers; what they have to sell, not what rational-consumers want, as that requires market research' /end further rant regards Rohan McLeod

FWIW Sony Xperia devices ship with an answering machine on the phone. I haven't tried it out. Sony adds some nice features to their android - I use most of them - location based wifi, power saving modes, ... just I don't use my phone as a phone very much, so haven't tried the answering machine :) cheers, robin
