Re: [luv-talk] moving partition

While installing Linux recently, I found that Windows 10 would only shrink the NTFS partition to approximately half of its previous size. I read claims via a web search for information on this subject that there are metadata in the middle of an NTFS partition, and Microsoft's tools won't reduce the size of the file system beyond this point. I'm not sure how accurate this is, although it's consistent with the observed results.
To be clear are you claiming this is an intrinsic limitation of NTFS partitions or just the tools that MS provides ? MS tools for partition management eg "Computer Management-Storage-Disk Management" have always lagged well behind 3rd party tools; eg Partition Guru http://www.eassos.com ; Partition Magic https://www.partitionwizard.com/ regards Rohan McLeod

The claim that I read, as I understood it, was merely concerned with an alleged limitation in the MS tools, not necessarily inherent to NTFS. If there were a Linux command line NTFS resizing utility that was reliable, it may have been a better option for me.

Good Morning I have always recommended to new linux users to re-partition to disk within Win. Never noticed this limitation. I have re-sized NTFS with GParted, but sometimes need to restart Win a couple of times to re-settle NTFS Keith Bainbridge keithrbau@gmail.com +61 (0)447 667 468 On 4/2/19 9:53 am, Jason White via luv-talk wrote:

I routinely use gparted to resize ntfs and it gets the tools from ntfs-3g such as ntfsresize and haven't had any issues.
