Anyone looked and/or considering buying a Librem_5 mobile phone ?....oops earlier email to wrong list

Interested to hear comments, complaints, theories......etc regarding the soon to be released Librem_5 mobile phone; which claims to be 'crowd-sourced' more secure hardware running more secure OS ; ("PureOS"seems to be a Debian variant ) https://puri.sm/products/librem-5/ regards Rohan McLeod

I paid for it in 2017, I hope it is as good as I expected then. When I get mine I'll take it to LUV meetings and show people. -- My Main Blog http://etbe.coker.com.au/ My Documents Blog http://doc.coker.com.au/

So (I read) no obvious issues with the hardware or software as specified; but just remaining open-minded; whether device lives up to expectations ?
When I get mine I'll take it to LUV meetings and show people.

Ditto. I hope to see it soon. I have to say that I've been burned by other crowd sourced projects and if puri.sm ever goes via one of the /other/ traditional platforms, then I wouldn't participate in any newer projects. I would love to see this as well. Their laptop effort was criticised by some (for the quality and related reasons, I believe). I would love to get one of these after they iron out (expected) initial production issues and I really hope they succeed! Once this sees the light of day (finally), this device will be very popular (provided they don't go with other, 'traditional' platforms...
Cheers A.
Cheers Davor

By 'traditional', I meant kickstarter and the like, rather than direct puri.sm Quality "Android One" devices /may/ be okay, but the Nokia 7.1 seems to have that covered well at reasonable cost. What's up with that now that MS has officially dumped the Windows Phone? Will Nokia go back to Android? -- My Main Blog http://etbe.coker.com.au/ My Documents Blog http://doc.coker.com.au/

Well, for a period of time, no Nokia phone could be anything but Windows -- that period has expired. HMD make "Nokia" phones today and they are Android phones. Good value phones and the latest ones are getting Android Pie ... see attached email with some details. JB had all Nokia mobiles at 20% recently, so the 7.1 could have been had for a tad under $400 if you were lucky; perhaps it'll happen again. https://www.jbhifi.com.au/phones/Outright-Mobile-Handsets/nokia/nokia-7-1-mi... Cheers A.

As previosuly stated I am a great believer, in both open source and open hardware, I have done a lot of research on the librem5 and I have no doubt they will produce what they say they will produce. The Librem5 is a COMPLETELY new design, the team has gone to tremendous lengths to make sure all drivers will be open source. They have been working with the Free Software Foundation to make sure they can call the design open. They also have been working with the firm thats actually making the device to make sure it will be reliable, They stated the initial production run will only be 5000 devices. Given the interest its likely these will not be availble for a long time. I have been looking to get a mobile phone for emergency use when my Greenspeed Magnun trike breaks down. While a simple and cheap device would do I have been drawn to the Librem 5 due to its open design. I am a GREAT believer in open source and i like to have as much control over the hardware as possible and like for instance that the librem 5 uses a stand tip ring sleeve 3.5mm audio out put socket. To get some idea of the hardware I have look at 3 current reviews of Purisms Librem 13 and 15 laptops, the 15 is currnetly at the 4 th revision, the review of the 13 was for the 2nd revision and for the 15 the 3rd revision. All the reviews were basicly rave reviews all 3 reviewers being very impressed on the design the usability and particulary the ease of dismantling and upgrading/repairing what ever is required. If you like as much control of the hardware as possible and strongly believe in the open source philosophy Then Purism's devices will be worth a real close look other wise I would not worry. Note: if one is cautious it may be worthwhile to wait for version 2 of the Librem 5, in the laps tops each revision released has been a marked improvemenet. I will shortly be putting in a preorder for a Librem 5. (as soon as funds come from my investment accounts).
