Tomorrow: "Effective Altruism and Climate Change"

A Meetup I thought would interest a reasonable proportion of LUV-talk, at least those on the list that frequently post to it. (The rest of you are mostly a mystery, but you presumably have an interest in at least some FOSS and in quality+quantity of life.) Am I the only one here who feels like Climate Change is getting way disproportionate attention compared to other ecological threats such as accumulation of plastic refuse? Obviously ecosystems have complex interplay between various factors, eg. if ozone layer destruction hadn't been slowed, any greenhouse effects could have been much worse by now! But I think that's a reason to NOT overly focus on "Greenhouse Gases" and particularly almost all on CO2. Regarding 'altuism'; once one leaves the clear waters of science: and 'what is happening' and 'what is causing it'; to ask or asert 'what should happen' one is actually in a category of philosophy, which deals with values, ethical-prescription and ethical-ends. Other categories are ontology, epistemology and perhaps metaphysics ! Whilst I would always support personal enquiry, over the authority of tradition; surely it can do no harm to check one's conclusions are not , overly parochial ? regards Rohan McLeod

Regarding 'altuism'; oops ....better make that 'altruism' once one leaves the clear waters of science: and 'what is happening' and 'what is causing it'; to ask or asert 'what should happen' one is actually in a category of philosophy, which deals with values, ethical-prescription and ethical-ends. Funny, that. (Funny strange, not funny ha-ha.) In my geographical area in a strange silicon-bestrewn land across a wide ocean, I've maintained a calendar of local, interesting technical events, http://linuxmafia.com/bale/ . After many years of ignoring Meetup, Inc. groups, I've lately had a painful reassessment that I can no longer _completely_ ignore them, but needed a policy to deal with certain craziness such as the above. So, as of a couple of months ago, every mention of a Meetup, Inc. event on my calendar bears a footnote with hyperlink. And the hyperlink goes here: http://linuxmafia.com/faq/Essays/meetup.html Damning with faint praise is an art form well worth cultivating, I've always said.

Hmm..... usually discussing philosophy on luv-talk; seems more like a conversation with a black-hole; than an intelligent bomb; a la Dark-Star ! regards Rohan McLeod

I hope I will be forgiven for including a jokey reference to a very funny movie in an otherwise completely on-topic (in my admittedly biased opinion, aka I hope) response on luv-main. The (I think, I hope) on-topic bit was where you wrote > >.............snip Bless you for caring about topicality. I do, as well. As a gentle correction: *I* was not discussing philosophy on luv-main. The gentleman to whom I responded was. I very deliberately did _not_ engage with him on philosophy, but instead attempted to deflect that to a jokey reference to 'Dark Star' -- specifically _because_ I felt that the other gentleman was veering severely off-topic. I doubt tht three words from a classic cult movie and a URL are a problem. If they are, I regret my error -- but ask for acknowledgement of good intentions. Thank you, sincerely!
