I have an ongoing problem of headphone cables breaking. Last time I bought
cables JB HiFi charged $9 each for retractable cables, they didn't seem to be
overly high quality as they didn't last longer than other cables.
I'm now looking in to buying a heap from China. One possibility is headphone
cables with built in microphone for about $2 each so I can buy enough that I
won't run out for ages.
If anyone wants to buy some then let me know. But I'm not interested in
selling less than 5 items.

It sounds like you are using headphones which have a socket rather than
a captive cable.
I find it isn't the cable per se that is at fault, it is the (near)
absence of proper strain/bending relief on the device or plugs.
The Chinese _can_ do it correctly, you just have to specify exactly what
is wanted, and reject items that don't meet the spec (which for a simple
cable will run to a couple of pages).
