Thanks! As it happened, I had to say to someone today "you're wrong in HTML4" and "... I think you're also wrong in HTML5, but my infrastructure is all still geared for HTML4 so I'm not 100% certain I'm reading the spec right."

You could also look at http://about.validator.nu/#src although it could be a nuisance to install, or worse, especially if you find a dependency on Java intolerable. I haven't tried installing it.
