Have you run a self-test with smartctl and checked the state of the drive with smartctl -a? I've never done this over a USB connection; others on the list should know whether it works in that case. The test is actually carried out by the drive's firmware. This would be my recommendation. Of course, you should make a backup elsewhere of all important data and act under the assumption that this drive may be dead soon.
