a while ago I've got an e-mail asking me to fill out a report about IT assets. They claim to work for Microsoft, that Microsoft has the right to ask for this information and I have to do it. I wouldn't be sending them anything until they can authenticate and authorize themselves as acting on MS's behalf.

I have received it before, and it was clearly a scam to me. I don't remember the exact reason why I concluded it was a scam. As far as I remember there was a piece of information in it supposedly relating to me which was completely false and there is NO way it could have genuinely related to me.
So IT IS FAKE. Cheers Daniel.
