Really? I didn't think smartphones ever had less than, oh, 128MB of RAM. That's enough to run a *current* generation Debian system (though admittedly not with all the GUI chaff). And stuff like OpenWRT happily works on 4/4MB systems and busybox deals with checking for permissions just fine. According to Wikipedia, the first retailed android was HTC Dream, which has 256/192MB. That's more than enough for a few or-dies.
