That's just word non-sense.
A male person whom acts is an actor and a female person is a an actress; just because one is used interchangeably [in these /special/ times] doesn't mean that it is /right/ ... I've always liked the idea that a girl is a girl and a boy is a boy and that extends for males/females in adulthood.
Other gender neutral terms are equally offensive to me when there is a perfectly good gender version that doesn't need to be avoided.
