I think it's a really splendid idea. First of all, it wins in the sense of accomplishing the easy parts and deferring the difficult parts. Also, it makes give you something that is yours and can be migrated. Which is to say, domains and related DNS are modular parts of the solution. You can use best of breed for each of the modular pieces. Implement each of them wherever best suits your needs, and bear in mind your freedom to move each to somewhere different.
