I have been looking to get a mobile phone for emergency use when my Greenspeed Magnun trike breaks down. While a simple and cheap device would do I have been drawn to the Librem 5 due to its open design. I am a GREAT believer in open source and i like to have as much control over the hardware as possible and like for instance that the librem 5 uses a stand tip ring sleeve 3.5mm audio out put socket. To get some idea of the hardware I have look at 3 current reviews of Purisms Librem 13 and 15 laptops, the 15 is currnetly at the 4 th revision, the review of the 13 was for the 2nd revision and for the 15 the 3rd revision. All the reviews were basicly rave reviews all 3 reviewers being very impressed on the design the usability and particulary the ease of dismantling and upgrading/repairing what ever is required. If you like as much control of the hardware as possible and strongly believe in the open source philosophy Then Purism's devices will be worth a real close look other wise I would not worry. Note: if one is cautious it may be worthwhile to wait for version 2 of the Librem 5, in the laps tops each revision released has been a marked improvemenet. I will shortly be putting in a preorder for a Librem 5. (as soon as funds come from my investment accounts). Ditto. I hope to see it soon.
I have to say that I've been burned by other crowd sourced projects and if puri.sm ever goes via one of the /other/ traditional platforms, then I wouldn't participate in any newer projects.
I would love to see this as well. Their laptop effort was criticised by some (for the quality and related reasons, I believe). I would love to get one of these after they iron out (expected) initial production issues and I really hope they succeed! Once this sees the light of day (finally), this device will be very popular (provided they don't go with other, 'traditional' platforms...
Cheers A.
