Hello all, I have set a box for a friend running Kubuntu 16.04 with a brother MF7680DW multifunction printer/scanner attached via usb. I have installed the latest drivers from the Brother website and the printer works fine but the scanner is not found by any scanning program. Research indicates that there is a permissions issue error. The solution is to run |sudo chmod 666 /dev/bus/usb/001/002 |which fixes the usb bus permissions problem and the scanner is found. Am I able to place this command somewhere so that it is executed on startup? How do I overcome the issue of needing root access? Thanks Bob

Are you sure that model number is correct ; google can't seem to find it !
I suspect: Brother MFC-7860DW Compact Monochrome Laser All-in-One Printer (Note digit transposition.) There's some sort of dismal proprietary binary-only SANE driver from the manufacturer. (Personally, I regard that as the manufacturer telling you 'Hullo, you bought unwisely, and should sell this hardware to someone and buy a replacement supported by open source, but perhaps that's just me.)

If it's that printer I am curious why the 'always-prone-to-losing' devices USB is being used instead of the more robust Ethernet (cable or wireless) option ? (Since IP can usually be locked to MAC address.) http://www.brother-usa.com/MFC/ModelDetail/4/MFC7860DW/spec regards Rohan McLeod
