I have a Ubuntu server running pppoe through a D-Link DSL-502T in Annexe-M and bridge mode. The DSL 502T seems to have become a bit flakey in that seems to require restarting every week or so, whereas it used to run for months without being touched. So I'm looking for a drop-in replacement, but everything currently available seems to have wireless (which I don't want) and/or I can't confirm they support bridging and Annexe-M. Can anyone suggest a current model modem I could drop in? -- Regards, Mark Dods, VK3ZR madods@optusnet.com.au QF22NE

Hi A vigor 120 would work although ADSL speeds wouldn't be as good as your current modem. Deano sent from my Android On 17 Dec 2012 07:21, "Mark Dods" <madods@optusnet.com.au> wrote:

You could buy a Traverse Technologies Solos card if your server has a PCI slot - not exactly drop-in replacement however. I am very pleased with mine. I've read consistently favourable reports on Whirlpool about Tomson Speedtouch modems, including the observation that they have a telnet interface, but I haven't used one.

I've been using netcomm nb6 which is a single Ethernet port adsl modem. No wireless. I've been told they aren't making them anymore and that the replacement is wireless, but I'm not sure if that's true or not. James

An alternative might be to repair the D-Link if it has been otherwise good. It may be beyond repair but open it up and check for bulging capacitors. James

Good idea. I'll have a look at that. -- Regards, Mark Dods, VK3ZR madods@optusnet.com.au QF22NE

Why is having a feature that you don't want a problem? Can't you just turn Wifi off? -- My Main Blog http://etbe.coker.com.au/ My Documents Blog http://doc.coker.com.au/

Its not a problem, I'd just prefer not to buy features I don't need if there's a good alternative. -- Regards, Mark Dods, VK3ZR madods@optusnet.com.au QF22NE

Economy of scale means it'll probably be cheaper to get one with standard features and not use them, than to go out of your way to specially order one that doesn't have those features. While I agree with the general sentiment, in this case you're looking at, what, a difference of $10 on a $70 device? Who cares.

If you have a spare laptop power supply hanging around, try that first - it may just be blips on the power and the old PS is now on the edge. When my double conversion UPS died I started to need to do the odd reset of the modem.

In the past I've thrown a cheap and cheerful TPLink in bridge mode at a few situations and seen them work stably. I think the model was 8810. Once they're up and running, if you tweak the ethernet interface on your server and add appropriate routes, you can still access the telnet interface on the modem to check things like SNR or reboot it etc. Last I checked it cost about $30-40 :D ... I wouldn't run it as a router (even though it can do it) though..
