As Andrew has noted we have been kicked out of our meeting room. We are actively looking for other options. If you know of a meeting room we can use for minimal cost (or ideally for free) then please let us know. If you know of a meeting room that's available at 6:30 on the 6th of March then let us know ASAP!!! Especially if it's not too far from the previous meeting room. If a company is only available to provide a venue for a single meeting then that's totally OK, anything to get us out of the current predicament. Andrew is actively investigating some possibilities right now. But we can't assume he will be successfull (espectially not for next month's meeting due to short notice). Also I can't comment on what he is persuing. Please send any tips for commercial organisations that might provide free or subsidised meeting space to the committee or Andrew. Such things can't be discussed on a public list. For future planning (IE April and beyond) I think we should at least consider more radical options. If we were to hold the main meeting on a weekend then the following 2 options would be available. Red Hat have generously sponsored our meeting venue for many years. I hope that they will continue doing so, but as they have paid the bills directly we have no idea of how much they paid and how much they are prepared to pay in future. So obviously a cheap venue would be preferred. http://www.melbourne.vic.gov.au/community/libraries/locations/Pages/location... The Library at the Dock is only open until 7PM on weeknights but is open 10-5 on Saturday and 12-5 on Sunday. Sunday had free parking last time I checked. http://www.melbourne.vic.gov.au/community/hubs-bookable-spaces/the- dock/library-at-the-dock/Pages/performance-space.aspx If LUV is a "not for profit organisation from within the City of Melbourne" then a nice room for 120 people costs $24.50 per hour which is probably a lot less than what Red Hat has been paying. http://www.melbourne.vic.gov.au/community/hubs-bookable-spaces/the- dock/library-at-the-dock/Pages/fees-for-bookable-spaces-library-dock.aspx The above lists all the available spaces at the library. From a quick scan the performance space seems most suitable and it's at least a good place to start the discussion. But if we do choose the library then another space might have some benefits. Also note that the library has a cafe downstairs. It's not cheap, but having a choice to buy slightly expensive food is better than having no choice. They also have extensive facilities that can be used for free before or after a meeting. http://www.melbourne.vic.gov.au/community/hubs-bookable-spaces/kathleen-syme... library-and-community-centre/pages/multi-purpose-room-1.aspx The Kathleen Syme library has a room seating 56 people "theater style" for $10.50 per hour for "Not-for-profit in CoM municipality". hi I can recommend the The Kathleen Syme library as meeting rooms are well equipped similarly to the Trinity lecture theatre Steve On 22/02/17 21:20, Russell Coker via luv-main wrote:

I recommend The Dan O'Connell down the road from Melbourne University. It's free early in the week and I would be happy to introduce you to the functions room manager. We run the MLUG meetings there on the last Monday of the month so it could become a central place for linux talks. We have been conducting our meetings there for nearly two years now and it's been a delight. The food and atmosphere is good and it has a projector and room for up to 200 people. By the way we are having our meeting next Monday so if you do want to come down and check out the place then this might be a good time. Details on the website http://mlug-au.org Feel free to contact me if want to chat about. Cheers, Michael Pope /MLUG admin./

Actually that sounds like an interesting idea. I used to attend SCA meetings at the Dan O'Connell decades ago - that's where a mutual friend first suggested that Katherine should marry me! :)

Great idea. In fact I'd love to start some better communication and cooperation between MLUG and LUV. Thanks, Andrew

And maybe a little later start time?

Currently some attendees go for dinner after the meetings, but I guess we could reverse that and have dinner first and then meetings. Are there any members who currently attend LUV main meetings and would be seriously inconvenienced by a later start time, say 7pm? Cheers, Andrew

I personally find the meetings very late as is, especially after you consider the (up to) 30 minute wait for the next train and 1+ hour train trip home afterwards. -- Brian May <brian@linuxpenguins.xyz> https://linuxpenguins.xyz/brian/

When we had the meetings start at 7PM the dinners afterwards were well attended so it seemed that plenty of people didn't find that a problem. One of the reasons for making it start earlier was the difficulty of getting into the room we have just been evicted from. So we have one less reason for making it 6:30. That said, it is a somewhat late night so there are benefits to having it as 6:30. If you finish work at 5PM in most parts of the greater Melbourne area you can get there by 6:30. -- My Main Blog http://etbe.coker.com.au/ My Documents Blog http://doc.coker.com.au/

Russell or Andrew; if you are willing to change the date as well as the time; you could try the Melbourne Unitarian Church in Grey Street East Melbourne ; but 1st and second Tuesdays are definitely NOT available. Also on the east side of Melbourne Uni , the Melbourne Skeptics Society has recently started using the Clyde Hotel (cnr Elgin and Cardigan Streets); so that might also be possible on another night early in the week ! regards Rohan McLeod

How easy is that to get to by public transport? The recent locations have been good for public transport which is a major factor. Also if we are going to not meet on the first Tuesday then we will have to have a wider discussion about times and dates. In which case maybe a weekend would be a good option.

Probably about the same as the Dan; which has buses in Princes Street and Rathdown street; and trams in Lygon and Nicholson Street; not sure about parking ! The Melbourne Unitarian Church in Grey Street East Melbourne ; has trams in Victoria Parade and plenty of park ing behind; there are trains on the otherside of the Fitroy Gardens at Parlement Station

Pubs and cafes are often very quiet Monday, Tuesday but less so weekends; so whilst weekends might be more attractive to attendees; the choice of venues (especially cheap ones) will be much less ! regards Rohan McLeod
