Re: New Motherboard/System Selection

The OCZ Vector is getting excellent reviews too. $289 for 256GB.
I've heard that OCZ should be avoided, wish I had a better reference, but the guy (tech guy at Centrecom) said go with Intel ... I mentioned Samsung, he said, yes, either of those two, but NOT OCZ. In fact he told my friend that OCZ was so bad that he would de-friend him if he chose one.
I purchased sometime back a pair of OCZ 128g Vertex 4 drives under a recommendation from a salesman of long aquantence. While once installed the drive works OK, the first drive installed did some __EXTREMELY__ strange stuff on start up. Effectively delaying the boot up by minutes. Had to switch the system off twice to get it working. So the second drive has been dumped so if anyone wants it to play with you are quite welcome to it. I have since gone with IBM SSD drives although Samsung are getting some good writeups one review saying they actual make there own SSD chips unlike allmost every one else. Lindsay

As a counterpoint, here are Marc Merlins experiences with poor ramdom I/O performance with a Samsung SSD (and its replacement), early death of Crucial SSDs and good experience s with OCZ Vertex 4. http://marc.merlins.org/perso/linux/post_2012-08-15_The-tale-of-SSDs_-Crucia... cheers, Chris -- Chris Samuel : http://www.csamuel.org/ : Melbourne, VIC

That sure goes against the flow.... I would have rated like this: 1. IBM 2. Samsung (probably 1 & 2 interchangeable) 3. Crucial -- only because they don't have an AU local presence that I know about. Cheers A.

I've heard the Intel drives are pretty good; surprised you're not mentioning them at all. I've never heard of the IBM ones!

Sorry, I did in fact mean Intel .... my error. <s>IBM</s> Intel/Samsung Intel/Samsung Intel/Samsung ... 50x Hope I don't make that mistake again! Kind Regards AndrewM
