Running apps not appearing on "MATE Panel 1.8.0"

Hi, Am running Linus Mint Qiana with the Mate interface. It's set to some classic mode, if I recall correctly (to look as similar as possible to an old Gnome style). Normally, the "bottom panel"(?), along the bottom of the screen, displays these things... -- Towards the left: "Menu" (which leads to Shutdown, Search, and all the installed apps), and all created short-cut icons. -- Towards the right: Date, time, network connection icon, System Update icon, sound control icon. -- In the middle: Tab for each application that is currently open and running (Firefox, Thunderbird, LibreOffice, etc.) But, in just the last day, all of the currently running apps (i.e. normally tabbed in the centre portion of the panel) do not appear in the centre of the panel. I'm only accidentally and haphazardly getting various programs to reappear on the screen, after I have minimised them, but I'm not sure how. Cause: Maybe I controlled my mouse incorrectly and can't recall how, and have configured the panel incorrectly? I've read through the Help offered when right-clicking on the Panel, and can see an incredible range of features, but nothing on making the tabs dis/appear for all running programs. Can anyone please help? ASAP? I'm concerned about shutting down the system with running apps and have trouble getting the running apps I want to access to "reappear" on the desktop. I have rebooted the system, but that hasn't fixed it. i.e. Minimised apps don't appear in the Panel. I think it only has one "desktop". i.e. There doesn't appear to be a shortcut way to switch between 2-3-4 different desktops/workspaces. So I don't think that's the problem. Thanks VERY much for any pointers. Carl Bayswater

Further to my last request... The Panel gives me different names and versions, depending on where I right-click within the Panel... Notification Area ver 1.8.0 The MATE Panel ver 1.8.0 Window List ver 1.8.0 Mint Menu 5.5.8 Maybe one of them controls the display of tabs for each minimised app, but choosing preferences for each one doesn't seem to lead me to a solution. I'm not a mate expert, but usually such pannels are sort of "containers" of widget, which you can add picking them from a list. "Mint menu", "Clock", "Notification area" are some of such widgets, while (I think) "MATE panel" is the container itself. Well, at the beginning I thought "Window list" was the widget missing in your panel, but since you get the version info by right-clicking on the panel, I deduce actually it is there, so unfortunately I do not know what to say more. Anyway, you might try to add a widget to the panel (by right-clicking in a free area of it, basically where you got the "MATE panel" version info), and pick from the appearing list something which looks like a window list, and even desktop list/selector. Another possibility is that the "window list" widget dimension is too small (for example if you accidentally dragged it to the right). If you find it in the panel (as you actually did when you got its version), just try to drag to the left. Good luck! -- Mick

Brilliant! THAT fixed it! Thank you. I had earlier seen (under Add To Panel) "Window List: Switch between open windows using buttons" but thought that it didn't apply. I was just being too cautious.

Tried that. Couldn't get anything to move by dragging it. Then I dragged an app icon (Firefox, somehow earlier moved into the middle part of the panel) somewhat to the right. VoilĂ ! Now I've got two copies of Window List in the centre part of my panel: One with an icon and a name for each app running, and again as a set of very small unlabelled vertical rectangles. And I can't figure out how to get rid of the latter (nor how to get the Firefox icon back to the left part of the panel with all the other app short-cuts). Better than nothing. Cheers, Carl

What you describe sounds really as if the latter was a too narrow window list. There should be a very small part of such widget, which can be right-clicked for deletion, or other operation (like getting version information). It is as much difficult to discribe, as it would be simple to show :-D -- Mick
