Hi, I need a wifi card for my desktop computer. I'm looking for either a free one or recommendations for one to buy. I'd like any recommendations to be cheap, money is tight at the moment. I can pick it up at the next meeting. Cheers, Bianca

If you have a PCI-Express slot available, you could buy a TP-LINK TL-WDN4800. I have one of these in my desktop machine, which I'm using as an access point with hostapd. $45 from msy.com.au as I recall. lspci shows 80:00.0 Network controller: Qualcomm Atheros AR93xx Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01)

Any reason why a USB adapter is not good? You can get cheap one these days. Daniel

Different people have different needs. I concluded that a PCI-Express card would give better performance.
USB 2.0 can do 32MB/s or more for block devices. I don't know what it can do for network devices but I expect that it can deliver the full performance of 100baseT and a higher speed than any ADLSL or cable net connection you can get in Australia. Bianca, does that system even have a spare PCIe slot? Maybe a PCI card would be an option. -- My Main Blog http://etbe.coker.com.au/ My Documents Blog http://doc.coker.com.au/

Thanks for the ideas everyone. I'll check if it has a PCI-e slot free when I get home tonight. It definitely has PCI slots free. I think the performance of either USB or internal would be fine, it's mainly going to be using my cable net connection. As Russell said either would be faster than my net connection. Internal has the advantage of leaving another USB port free, and I don't expect to be moving it between systems frequently. I'd expect any move it makes to be permanent. Bianca

Computerbank prices for PCI Wireless cards $5 (b/g) or $10 (b/g/n) Sat 12.30pm - 5.00pm http://www.computerbank.org.au/shop - but I'd confirm they have any first

Ooh, thanks. If I end up buying I think I'll go there because I'd like to support them. Cheers, Bianca

Are you sure you'd like a wifi card? A USB adapter would be cheaper. MSY has a TP-Link TL-WN725N 150Mbps Wireless N Nano USB Adapter for $9 that the Amazon reviews say is quite sensitive. MSY also has a TP-LINK TL-851ND PCI 2T2R Wireless-N 300 Network Adapter PCI card for $19.

I have an internal wifi card somewhere at home; 802.11a/b/g only, not n. (52mbps) I'm pretty sure it's PCI-Express. Free to a good home. I won't be at the next LUV meeting, but Fitzroy isn't too far out of the way. On 22 November 2013 23:19, Bianca Gibson <bianca.rachel.gibson@gmail.com> wrote:

If it's not too late, I've also got a tower PC sitting in a storeroom with a broken power supply, with a wifi card (I think PCI). I'm pretty sure it's Linux compatible -- that's why I got it. Bianca (or anyone else) you're welcome to it. I could get it out before the next LUV main meeting and bring it along. Another place worth knowing about for computer bits is A1 Used Computers on Queensberry Street in North Melbourne. I've got stuff from them for almost 20 years now. -- Smiles, Les.

You can also use a wifi router/access point. Most (some) can be run in client mode and allow you to use the wifi as your upstream connection. I know I've done it on a WRT54GL with openWRT on it. I think some can do it with the factory firmware too. On Fri, Nov 22, 2013 at 11:19 PM, Bianca Gibson < bianca.rachel.gibson@gmail.com> wrote:
