Repairer suggestions for Thinkpad Laptop W510

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I wanted to know if anyone had any good experiences with laptop repairers in Melbourne, and specifically, I need to get the trackpoint mouse pointer replaced on a Lenovo/IBM W51- ThinkPad. Thanks Andrew

Is it just the cap that's the problem? If it is, buy new ones off lenovo: http://shop.lenovo.com/us/itemdetails/73P2698/460/46F05D50885846638F1DA21700... That's the US site, but just punch in 'trackpoint cap' and you'll find it. On 7 August 2012 23:16, Andrew Voumard <andrewv@melbpc.org.au> wrote:

NFI. I buy cheap netbooks so when one dies I just throw it away :P

Presumably it's out of warranty? Even if it is, it occurs to me that if you ring lenovo they might tell you who does their in-warranty repairs, and presumably they'll do at least a tolerable job.

I'd find the part needed, find it on ebay and do it myself. I've replaced the fan/cooling assembly in a X61 before and it's not too hard, I can't imagine that the keyboard would be hard either. -- Stewart Smith

The hardware maintenance manual for that model is here: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-74250 It will give you the correct part number to order as well as the instructions for swapping it. One of the main reasons I stick with ThinkPads - these manuals are excellent. Cheers, -- Trish Fraser VVMZ4 91L2V -35.67896, 142.66637 GNU/Linux 1997-2012 #283226 linuxcounter.net

their laptop hardware also has a reputation for generally being well supported by the Linux kernel. My experience with a Thinkpad X200 has been encouraging in this regard.
