Recently the micro SD card in my Samsung Galaxy S3 stopped working. As I wasn't sure whether the card or the phone was broken I tried connecting it to my Thinkpad T61 running Debian/Unstable. It gave the following log entries when I inserted the card (in a holder to make it fit the full size SD socket in the Thinkpad). Is this proof that the micro SD card is broken? I will of course try other cards in the phone (which needs more storage) and try the card in another phone (it probably has data I want to keep). But I lack enough hardware to be sure that there isn't some strange partial compatability issue. Everywhere? They're as ubiquitous and cheap as USB keys. I got my last one from officeworks, purely because they were just down the road. I probably paid about 20% extra compared to MSY, but that's still only $5, so who gives a toss? $ msy | foldr grep -i -- 16g 'micro.*sd\|usb' | sort -nk2 -t'|' Sandisk 16GB Genuine USB2.0 Flash Pen Disk Drive C Genuine Retail |10 Patriot 16GB LifeStyleSwing USB2.0 Flash Pen Disk Drive C Genuine Retail|11 Kingston 16GB Flas Drive Micro Secure Digital Card (Micro-SDHC) C |12 Kingston 16GB USB2.0 DataTraveller Flash Pen Disk Drive C Genuine Retail|12 Sandisk 16GB Genuine Micro-SDHC MicroSDHC C Genuine Retail Packing|13 Kingston 16GB Class10 Micro SD (SDHC) C Genuine Retail Packing |15 Kingston KINDT111/16GB 16G USB3.0 Flash Pen Drive |15 Patriot 16GB Class10 Micro SDHC-Flash Drive Secure Digital Card-Genuine |15 Patriot PSF16GSPUSB Supersonic PULSE 16GB USB3.0 Flash Pen Drive |15 Patriot PSF16GLSEL3USB LifeStyle ELEMENT 16GB USB3.0 Flash Pen Drive |18 16G Sandisk ULTRA MicroSD Class 10 SDSDQUA-016G |19 Sandisk EXTREME SDCZ80-016G-XQ46 16GB USB3.0 Flash Pen Drive |19 16G Samsung MicroSD PLUS UHS-I Class 10 - MB-MPAGC/CN (up to 48MB/s) |22 Patriot 16GB Supersonic Boost XT USB3.0 Daul Channel USB3.0 Flash Pen |22 16G Samsung MicroSD PRO UHS-I Class 10 - MB-MGAGB/CN (up to 70MB/s read,|31

I had an SD card that I permanently broke by putting it in the wrong slot of a multislot USB reader! I just got lots of messages about the device not responding to requests. Just tried it now with a Wheezy (3.2) kernel and it isn't even seen. Also I would suggest for a camera (or camera phone) you get a high class (10+?) rated u-SD otherwise saving pictures can be annoying slow (at least a few years ago - almost unbearably). http://cyber.com.au/~twb/.bin/msy http://cyber.com.au/~twb/.bin/foldr But I use map far more than foldr. (Also I cheated, since msy in the example above secretly includes LC_ALL=C w3m -dump msy.html | sed 's/^.//;s/.$//')
