Can anyone on the list give me any recommendations for online stores to buy computer parts or for that matter warnings of places to avoid. I am looking to build my first system since coming to this country and don't know any of the suppliers. I always used to use http://www.ebuyer.com when I was in the UK and am looking for something similar in Melbourne. Stripes.

Here are some stores in Melbourne that you can order online and walk-in to pick up: MSY has many branches. It is generally fine if you know exactly what you want but not so great otherwise. Many stores in Melbourne and 1 or 2 of the regional centres. They did have some issues with trying to avoid their responsibilities regarding warranties in the past, so caveat emptor. I have never had to return a product with them and their prices are cheap so I do end up buying from them. www.msy.com.au PCDIY is a great store located in Box Hill. Very similar prices to MSY but better service generally. This is my pick of the stores I have listed here (if they have what I want). pcdiy.com.au Centrecom has a few stores and offers prices not too far off the above two. Not sure about their service and support. centrecom.com.au I'm not sure if the above stores offer delivery if that is what you are after. I would agree with the statement below: On 3 April 2012 10:19, thelionroars <thelionroars1337@gmail.com> wrote:

Their customer service is "lacking" (for want of a better work), and they do try to worm their way out of any support, but I have never had a problem with their hardware or their rock bottom low prices. If I wanted better customer service, I guess I could pay more for it somewhere else like Harvey Norman... ...Ric -- Ric de France Ph: +61412945554 (international) or 0412945554 (Australia) --> Do you, uh... Got my son a new computer and MSY has a limited range so got some parts from MSY and some from umart: http://www.umart.com.au/ Happy with everything *except* the OCZ 60G Vertex II E Series SSD which failed probably due to the buggy firmware on the SSD (apparently if your computer sleeps it can corrupt the internal data structures and it locks up). I could have returned it and got another refurbished one - but my son wasn't interested in risking it again. It was only for fast boot up and he did have passwords saved on the SSD... Andrew

Avoid MSY and Computer Parts Land like the plague. You *will* eventually get burnt. The only question is whether you get enough value out of them before the burning occurs. MSY in particular have an bad track record (see, for example, http://www.arnnet.com.au/article/383733/updated_msy_fined_203_500_by_federal...). CPL isn't much better, being the target of anecdotal ACCC investigations several times. I recommend Centrecom (http://www.centrecom.com.au). Their pricing is very close/matches the above, and "service" actually means something to CC. I've been shopping at Centrecom for nigh on a decade. No real complaints apart from the occasional smart-arse salesperson (who never get to be employed there for very long anyway). George -- Email to luv-sub@tripleg.net.au will bounce. Email to george at the same domain will accept.

I get all my parts from a local rural supplier. Ross Northmore he has never sold me garbage, everything works as he says it does. He knows his stuff, sells only quality parts at a very low markup above wholesale, has no computer store to maintain, and can explain if something is not going to perform to expectations ---- but is somewhat anti Linux. Couriers to anywhere in Victoria, if that's any help. Roger

I think this thread is more appropriate for luv-talk. Moving it there. Cheers Daniel On Tue, 3 Apr 2012 10:34:16 +1100 stripes theotoky <stripes.theotoky@googlemail.com> wrote:
