adsl modem that gets power over USB

I've replaced my home router with a little laptop, and it's working great. Does anyone make an ADSL modem that can be run (and powered) via USB? Most have USB ports but I suspect can't use it as a power source. This would allow my internet connection to stay up during the power outages that get more frequent out here once fire season starts. Thanks James

Hi James, I have a D-Link DSL-200 ADSL Modem that connect/power via the USB port. The modem actually comes only with a USB socket and a RJ socket (which you connect to the ADSL/phone line) everything still packed in it's original retail box. I use the DSL-200 to connect to ADSL via Windows XP for my daughter many years ago (she only use M$ OS) she later upgraded to other model and I keep the DSL-200 until now. I haven't test the DSL-200 via Linux as I don't have ADSL connection at my place and my understanding is that you may need the right linux driver for this modem to work. Please contact me off list for the price! Best regards, Victor Mong On 22/11/2014, James Harper <james@ejbdigital.com.au> wrote:

Thanks for the offer, but anything "many years ago" is likely going to be ADSL1 only, and also these things tend to deteriorate over time (capacitors dry out etc). I'm after a new one, just wanted some recommendations on models. Thanks James

How about a battery backed DC supply that replaces the normal plug pack? You might need to be proactive to make, might be not an off the shelf item. Basically, a slightly over rated plug pack to charge a battery pack, then some form of regulation to the voltage for the ADSL modem.
Thanks

Not sure if this helps but my backup hard drive ($80 from dick smith a year ago) that lives on the desk somewhere, plugs in to the usb port and gets it's power from there I think it's only 3 volts, whether that's enough for a modem I do not know.. Roger

All my modems want to draw 1 to 1.5 amps at 9 or 12V, which would correspond to 1.8 to 3.6 amps at 5V, but USB cables aren't rated to anywhere near that amperage. Sounds like you should buy a UPS to me. You can get pretty cheap ones these days, eg $75: http://www.msy.com.au/home/13486-eaton-5e650iusb-au-5e-650va-360w-ups-with-2... You could build your own out of a 12V battery, battery charger, and a 12V regulator, but it'll still come to over $50 and be a mess of wires.. http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=SB2485 http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=MB3523 http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=MP3678
