stopping KMS via the "options radeon modeset=0" stanza worked with my 9250se on a debian squeeze system, but failed to work on a similarly dated Linux Mint installation, go figure...

Probably looking for the file in another location. I delibrately stated Debian in my post as thats where its put in this distro. There is no garruntee other distros use the same location. Lindsay
