Hi everyone, My 2012 nexus 7 isn't turning on anymore but is still in warranty. I'll be getting a refund for it pretty soon and may replace it. I was mainly using it for uni stuff, so I'm not sure it's worth replacing now I've finished. I need to think about it a bit more. I liked my nexus 7 apart from it breaking. Something sturdier would be ideal, I won't necessarily break another one with such good timing. Does anyone have the 2013 nexus 7, how are you finding it? The price range I'm looking at is $300ish. Cheers, Bianca

Before you return it for warranty, the issue may be that the battery has entirely drained and it won't recharge. It's a "design fault", affects mine too. Try this: http://www.droid-life.com/2012/12/27/fix-nexus-7-refusing-to-charge-try-this... I love my 2012 Nexus 7 apart from this exact issue above... it's fine if you're a regular user of a tablet but I'll go weeks without using mine, so this will occur quite regularly. Annoying.
From my understanding the 2013 Nexus 7 doesn't have this issue and it's a worthy upgrade over the 2012. If I used my tablet more I'd not hesitate to buy one.

the article states that this is due to a firmware bug that only appeared after the 4.2 update. that sounds more like a software update that included some planned obsolescence. or more like forced rather than planned. a lot of users will just assume the battery is dead and discover or decide that it is far easier to just buy a new one than to attempt to enforce their warranty rights. apple lost a class action lawsuit in the US several years back because their ipad batteries weren't replaceable and were designed to last, iirc, only 18 months or less. i would expect and hope that winning a class action against a company that issued a software update that falsely simulated the battery dying would be a much easier prospect. craig ps: i'm very happy with my (original model) Nexus 7. excellent device. I haven't allowed it to reboot to install the update it has been nagging about for a few months though. mostly because my level of trust of google has gone from "extremely low" to "none" and i'd rather install cyanogenmod or something else...but i made the mistake of not rooting the nexus 7 when i bought it over a year ago so will likely lose all of my data + settings when i do get around to rooting it. if my nexus 7 died (really died - cracked screen or whatever), i'd almost certainly buy another one. but i'd root it and install CM or something immediately. and i don't think i'd install the google-apps bundle. google's play store is full of shit (a perfect example of Sturgeon's Law), fdroid's got most of the apps i actually need (the rest i can live without), and the only google service i'd really have to find a replacement for is google calendar. i'd be better off running my own calendar daemon if i could find an android calendar app that could connect to it (i already know that iceowl can be made to connect to any ical service) -- craig sanders <cas@taz.net.au>

It could, I suppose, be an unintended bug.

The source code and the revision history might well reveal whether it was a straightforward bug or an intended outcome (on the balance of probabilities).

Anyone has any experience with the very cheap bottom end android pad like the Pendo Pad selling for around $70 and similar ones. I realise they are cheap for a reason compared to Nexus - I also know they dont have 3G. But how good are they for only basic web browsing, checking email etc. IF I have to throw away a device after 2 yrs because of battery or accidental breakage, I'd better throw away $70 than $350. Daniel. (ps: also moving this to Luv-talk, so please reply there). On 12/12/2013 10:05, Craig Sanders wrote:

Craig, take a look at Owncloud as a calendar/contact/file server; I hook up DavDroid and CalDav Sync Adaptor to that (have had this set up for a month or so now since I wiped my phone, installed CM and shunned Google), with no significant issues so far. DavDroid does both contacts and calendars, but it displayed all my calendars in one colour (may've been fixed in a recent update) which is the only reason I grabbed CSA instead. The LG 8" "G Pad" tablet is worth a look -- but ensure you get the "Google Play Edition", not the standard one. (The GPE runs stock android and will receive updates from google, whereas the regular version runs LG's skinned version of Android, but won't receive updates as reliably) On 11 December 2013 12:52, Bianca Gibson <bianca.rachel.gibson@gmail.com> wrote:

Ryan: I'm aware of that issue, I've had it several times. Turns out the problem is that the usb port has come loose, so badly that I couldn't get it to charge at all before. I fluked on getting it to charge this morning when I picked it up. The guy in the store tells me that it looks like I damaged it, which makes sense since I dropped it on Friday and had to pop it closed. The next time I tried to charge it I had the problem. As Toby saw I was so sleep deprived I completely forgot. I'll check a bit later for myself. A replacement 2012 model is on it's way, ETA tomorrow or the day after. If it's clear that it's a manufacturing fault I'll get a refund instead. Cheers, Bianca

Myself, I got a cheap no-name tablet off eBay (Australian seller) for about $125 + $15 postage, and it's served me reasonably well. One thing you really might consider on getting a new tablet is one that has an easily replaceable battery. I know they do exist. I think ifixit.com might have some reviews. Just a rant, but given that batteries are consumables, with a useful life of only a couple of years, it's a real shame that otherwise usable hardware has to get junked just because the irreplaceable battery has died or dropped down to unusably low capacity. I'm sharpening up my spudger for when the battery on my tablet gives up the ghost, but that's not an option for your average punter. I own both the 2012 and 2013 Nexus 7 3G/4G and have been very happy with both. I upgraded to the LTE version for the potentially faster speeds (as they spend most of their lives as hotspots) but I really appreciate the performance improvements and screen resolution of the 2013 version. I’ve had no problems with either of them but they are either off or attached to a charger so my use case is probably atypical. I took a look inside, it very much looks like my fault. It correlates with my drop last week. I'm not looking for a new one now.
