Hi all Has anyone recently purchased a new laptop that they can recommend with good support for Linux drivers? I am thinking 14" screen. Cheers Gerd

I haven't bought one, but you could look at this vendor (mentioned favourably on the list recently): http://zareason.co.nz/Laptops/

Hi Gerd, I can highly recommend the Lenovo E320. It's screen is 13 inches from memory so that makes that entire machine about 14". I have had no issues finding support for hardware and from memory almost everything worked out of the box on a recent distro. The battery life is great for a laptop that size. I have made a few modifications to my OS to increase the battery life and I can get around 6 - 6.5hrs. I purchased mine just a few weeks ago at MSY for $599.. I'm sure they'll either do the same deal or a better one. Good Luck, Tom On Sat, Mar 2, 2013 at 8:22 AM, Gerd Berner <gberner@intraspect.com.au>wrote:

Hi Gerd I got a Zareason Ultralap 430 at the end of last year. Driver support has been good. The only thing I haven't gotten around to fixing is setting up multitouch on the touchpad. The RJ45 socket is useful and rare on ultrabooks. Also, because it has an MSATA and a regular 2.5" SATA drive bay, I should be able to squeeze in a second SSD if I need more space. The only thing that hasn't been good is Zareason's service. They took a LONG time to ship the thing, and when it came, they left out two case screws, which they have promised to send me, but which are yet to arrive. Apparently support@zareason.co.nz wasn't monitored for a long time.

Suggest you choose one with more than 2 usb ports or be prepared to carry a usb hub or use wireless peripherals, cos most only seem to come out with 2 usb ports on them, one of which is usb 3 and is not compatible with telstra broadband dongles and probably a few other devices as well. You're saying some USB2 devices aren't compatible with USB3 ports? It's the first I've heard of that -- could you cite some references? (Even just whirlpool threads or something)

Also had experience with usb3 external hard drives not allowing machine to boot if they were plugged in to usb2 ports. I tell most people who come into the shop with a printer to repair to go buy a new one as they are so cheap, but of the odd 1 or 2 that I have accepted, some of those dont work in usb3 ports either.
