Totem couldn't handle H.264; mplayer2 did.

I have totem 3.0.1 and libgstreamer0.10-0 installed, and youtube & other videos play fine, but an emailed apple-flavoured clip: $ file Desktop/IMG_8015.MOV Desktop/IMG_8015.MOV: ISO Media, Apple QuickTime movie shows only as grey/green/white diagonal bands, although the audio replays fine. Totem shows the properties of the clip as: Dimensions: 568 x 320 Codec: H.264 / AVC Framerate: 30 frames per second Bitrate: 701 kbps Installing mplayer2 was the first fix which worked. Is totem not up to playing Apple clips, or does it just need a config tweak / plugin ? The totem version might not be the latest - I'm on Debian 7.8.0. Erik

I wonder, perhaps it is a CODEC, version, profile or some other specific issue, H.264 [it seems that] is an evolving standard; there have been a number of versions as detailed in this Wiki entry [1].

Why not 7.9 now? That is the current version of Wheezy (old stable). Kind Regards AndrewM [1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264/MPEG-4_AVC

Since I'd been able to play youtube and vimeo clips without any version of mplayer installed, you're probably right - it's some "improvement" in the Apple Quicktime clip which was indigestible.

It may be age-induced decrepitude, or the cumulative effect of several concussions in a number of car collisions over the years, but the ability to concentrate for hours (as I did for 30 years in software development) is a thing of the past. Now I'm happier cutting and carting 8 - 10 tons of firewood for myself each year, and a similar amount for my brother who's on his way out with brain cancer, and relaxing in front of the wood heater with a book. At some stage, I'll try (again) to get printing working on Debian 7.8.0. (Apologies for the detailed truthful answer.) Erik
