Problems booting from DVD-Fedora 20

Hello All, Some months ago I installed a new motherboard (Asus Z97M-Plus UEFI) and an SSD. I installed Fedora 20 on the SSD without any problems (GUID partition table), but had a few issues getting Fedora to boot, either the MB manual or I'm a bit vague...one of the two, maybe both. In the end, using 'other OS' for the secure boot setting worked OK. Yesterday, for the first time since this install I had need to boot from a DVD, and it failed...always falling back to booting the SSD. After some discussions on an Asus site it was suggested that maybe I need to set the MB for IDE controller instead of AHCI, and that disabling 'fast boot' might help. Changing AHCI to IDE didn't help. Disabling 'fast boot' allowed the latest 'Gparted-live' DVD to boot, but still cannot boot older bootable DVDs that I have tried whilst testing this. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Cheers, -- Regards, Terry Duell

I've built a couple of PCs using the Asus Z97 boards and they've worked OK on legacy boot, from what I can remember. "Secure boot" probably needs to be off; Does "other os" do that, or is that a different setting? I don't remember what the Asus boards say. Change SATA controllers back to AHCI; IDE is for chumps. Go into the BIOS and find the "boot override" page, and then you should see that boot devices are listed twice, once for EFI boot and once for Legacy boot; select the latter. Some stuff for you to check in your BIOS, referring to where to find it by the manual for the motherboard. The "CSM" option is probably the most critical one you've missed, but the others will help too. Page 3-49 - CSM (Compatibility Support Module) - set to "Enabled". That should make some options appear: * Boot Device Control - set to "UEFI And Legacy" * Boot from storage devices - set to "Both" or perhaps in your case, "Legacy first". Page 3-50 - Secure Boot - set to "Other OS". While you're there, also "Install default secure boot keys" in case they were screwed up somehow. Page 3-47 - Fast Boot - Set to Disabled. Page 3-47 - SATA Support - Set to All Devices Page 3-48 - Boot logo display - set to "Disabled" in case there are messages. Page 3-49 - Option ROM messages - set to Enabled. Page 3-37 of your manual -- "Legacy USB Support" - set to "Enabled", or at least "Auto". Page 3-38 of your manual -- xHCI Mode - set to Smart Auto. Same page. Mass Storage Devices - set to Auto. Page 3-35 of your manual -- "SATA Mode Selection - set to AHCI On 30 January 2015 at 10:40, Toby Corkindale <toby@dryft.net> wrote:

Hello Toby, Well I now have success, at least with the one legacy boot DVD that has served as my main test case. You will see below, that my settings were 'almost' what you suggested. On Fri, 30 Jan 2015 11:02:58 +1100, Toby Corkindale <toby@dryft.net> wrote:

My settings were all as you suggest. For the latter I'm using "Both".
Page 3-50 - Secure Boot - set to "Other OS".
This was my setting
While you're there, also "Install default secure boot keys" in case they were screwed up somehow.
I haven't monkeyed with this, as I'm booting Fedora 21 OK.
Page 3-47 - Fast Boot - Set to Disabled.
was my setting.
Page 3-47 - SATA Support - Set to All Devices
was my setting, but this option is only available if "Fast Boot" set to enabled, so put it back to "Fast Boot" disabled.
Page 3-48 - Boot logo display - set to "Disabled" in case there are messages.
I had this enabled, now set to "Disabled".
Page 3-49 - Option ROM messages - set to Enabled.
was my setting
Page 3-37 of your manual -- "Legacy USB Support" - set to "Enabled", or at least "Auto".
was set to "Enabled", left it there.
Page 3-38 of your manual -- xHCI Mode - set to Smart Auto.
was my setting
Same page. Mass Storage Devices - set to Auto.
I don't have this option
Page 3-35 of your manual -- "SATA Mode Selection - set to AHCI
was my setting. So, the only real change I have made is Boot logo display set to "Disabled", and it now boots legacy boot DVD. Curious that this would be the cause of my problem, but hardly worth trying to figure out why. As I surmised, nought to do with the installed OS. Many thanks for your help Cheers, -- Regards, Terry Duell
