Re: New Motherboard/System Selection

Hi Bianca, I have tried USB adapters, but this mouse has a specialcustom protocol & drivers & it just won't work with the (various) adapters I have tried. Thanks Andrew At 09:52 AM 5/01/2013, Bianca Gibson wrote:

Have you looked for a USB adapter for either of those? That would probably give you more options.

I am curious about this mouse; please describe it (preferably citing make & model). PS: This thread arguably belongs on luv-talk.

Hi, It's a Cirque PowerCat GDB450 (it's a TouchPad), and no, there is no Linux driver on their site - but - they did release internals to a Linux developer way back, and there was a working 2.4 kernel driver (named kitkat) that I have the source to, and have had running under Fedora 3. I asked Crique about a Linux driver a while back, and sent one of their developers the src tarball I had (since he was not aware of it). Anyway, still waiting on progress on that front from Cirque. Otherwiise, I can possibly get XP in a virtualbox to work with it & then use UltraVNC+x11vnc or NX to get back to the main Linux box (a bit roundabout, but it would work). The mouse only supports a PS/2 or Serial port - I did buy one of the newer Cirque USB model touchpads, but for me they aren't much chop (ergonomically) compared to the PowerCat & so I don't use that one much. The (less preferable option someone else suggested was to use a separate box (ex. my XP laptop for the mouse & remote in that way) - less preferred, but I can go that way if need be. Sorry if I picked the wrong list. I don't know how to switch this to luv-talk but if it can be done then sure, otherwise continue it there or here ? Thanks Andrew At 12:29 PM 5/01/2013, Trent W. The fact that you are asking these questions indicates that porting the source to a recent kernel isn't a viable option for you. Do you have budget to pay someone to do this? Porting an ancient kernel driver for a specific piece of hardware to a newer kernel is going to be one of the easier kernel coding tasks and shouldn't cost much. Probably less than the cost of the PC.

Don't hold your breath. Driver development for hardware that's not being sold is very rare.
PowerCat & so I don't use that one much. The (less preferable option someone else suggested was to use a separate box (ex. my XP laptop for the mouse & remote in that way) - less preferred, but I can go that way if need be.
That will be cheapest and easiest.

As long as you are directly discussing Linux issues (such as how to get the device driver working in a recent kernel) this is the correct list. To change it to luv-talk you just remove luv-main from the To: field and replace it with luv-talk. -- My Main Blog http://etbe.coker.com.au/ My Documents Blog http://doc.coker.com.au/

have you tried one of the wacom tablet/touchpads? Possibly worth trying is the "bamboo" model, or maybe one of the smaller Intuos models. if their ergonomics are acceptable, they do have linux drivers (and are USB, so would also eliminate your dependance on the obsolete, hard-to-find ps2 interface) craig -- craig sanders <cas@taz.net.au>
