My understanding is that only scripts used by spammers do that. I've never heard of such behaviour from a legitimate MTA - if there is one, it has such a small share of MTA installations that I think we can safely not care about it. I might be wrong, but I suspect that you have to try the secondaries in order to implement the RFCs properly.
