Anyway, you might try to add a widget to the panel (by right-clicking in a free area of it, basically where you got the "MATE panel" version info), and pick from the appearing list something which looks like a window list...
Brilliant! THAT fixed it! Thank you. I had earlier seen (under Add To Panel) "Window List: Switch between open windows using buttons" but thought that it didn't apply. I was just being too cautious.
Another possibility is that the "window list" widget dimension is too small (for example if you accidentally dragged it to the right). If you find it in the panel (as you actually did when you got its version), just try to drag to the left.
Tried that. Couldn't get anything to move by dragging it. Then I dragged an app icon (Firefox, somehow earlier moved into the middle part of the panel) somewhat to the right. VoilĂ ! Now I've got two copies of Window List in the centre part of my panel: One with an icon and a name for each app running, and again as a set of very small unlabelled vertical rectangles. And I can't figure out how to get rid of the latter (nor how to get the Firefox icon back to the left part of the panel with all the other app short-cuts). Better than nothing. Cheers, Carl
