libfglrx-amdxvba1 is useful for any MPEG-2, MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) and VC-1 videos if your viewer program uses VA acceleration, not just streaming video. e.g. a USB stick full of linux.conf.au videos. most programs will use VA if it's available, or have an option to use it. mythtv-frontend, for example, has an option to use it just as it also has an option to use nvidia's VDPAU acceleration. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_Acceleration_API
