Quoting "Tim Connors" <tconnors@rather.puzzling.org>:
I don't get why geeks use Ubuntu. I think the usual argument is "it just works" .. but demonstrably, it just doesn't work
It worked for a while. The Unix desktop universe follows Douglas Adams: "There is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened." As soon as there was one graphical environment working, it was replaced by something "brand new". Linux-specific, a lot of that trickled back into the Linux kernel and "close relatives", as udev, the DBus to HAL 9000, the DeviceKit and the PoliceKit and whatever in-between. And that's all just to catch three events a day to plug/unplug a USB stick or to speed up a boot process. Regards Peter
