_Or_, setting up mdadm for Linux software RAID, but then declining to also set up LVM volume management, would be a second choice. LVM adds significant complexity to a system in the form of an abstraction layer for addressing covered mass storage devices -- which additional complexity is good if you appreciate its advantages more than you dis-appreciate the (considerable) additional system complexity.
