LVM adds significant complexity to a system in the form of an abstraction layer for addressing covered mass storage devices -- which additional complexity is good if you appreciate its advantages more than you dis-appreciate the (considerable) additional system complexity.
Yes, don't set up LVM unless you actually need it. I used to use it on my desktop workstation, but I haven't bothered for quite a few years now as it didn't really add much value. Cheers, Andrew
