Open data is okay, to a point. All too often de-identified data can be re-identified.... that's the biggest worry in terms of open data availability. There is a fair case for open data in terms of weather, traffic and other things that do not relate directly to any person, but once you get in the area of personal information, it's a real worry. The second huge problem is big data by governments and other large organizations. It has been shown time and time again that the data cannot be kept safe from breaches. Mandatory data breach legislation in Australia has given us 63 reported breaches from the fist 6 weeks -- that is more than 10 per week, this is insane. If you are going to be a big data organization, then you really, really need to protect it so much better. No way in the world do I want E health records for me, nothing medical is a concern, but there is too much there for identity theft and with systems being able to integrate with other systems, it is a serious problem. Oh, and of course, the UK system (same setup) has already been abandoned. We do not need this risk.
