I may have been a bit premature...the installed drive is an IDE.
I am very surprised that a new laptop would have an IDE drive these days.
It's not new. In my original post I did say "...I have inherited an Acer laptop on which I intend to install Linux"
My laptop is over three years old and it has a SATA drive according to the hardware manual.
I had looked through the manual but it didn't specify the drive type, and I assumed it was SATA, so it was a bit of a surprise when I opened the case to see an IDE. Not to worry, I'll just have to live with 'normal' performance :-) Cheers, -- Regards, Terry Duell
