I keep mine too; I maintain maildir-format folders (probably not the best option with XFS as the underlying file system, which is better for large files). Maildir folders are less amenable to corruption and avoid locking issues if accessed remotely via, for example, NFS. I eventually save the maildir folders into a compressed tar file, which is then kept for my own archival purposes.
