Ubunutu and Mint both fail when trying to modprobe hardware just after detecting the hard drives. Debian (using the NetInst 6.0.4 CD) gets in to the installer but can't detect either the GigE network card nor then Wifi card that are in my laptop. The GigE card is an Atheros AR8151 NIC. I've googled for suggestions, it appears that the 'atl1c' and/or 'atl1e' driver should do it, but the version of both included on the Debian install CD doesn't help the installer detect the NIC. I've not yet started on trying to figure out the WiFi card, as I was hoping to get the NIC working, install Linux and then build a custom kernel with the WiFi driver I need. The Debian NetInst CD runs kernel 2.6.32, but does offer me the option of installing modules off removable media. What I don't know is what files, file names, and the like I'd need to have on a USB memory stick to do that. And then I'd also need to actually get the required files. The Atheros NIC uses VENDOR ID: 1969 and DEVICE ID: 1083. I am tempted to install Virtualbox on to my laptop, install Linux in there, and then build a custom kernel with the correct drivers, but I would prefer to avoid that if possible. Can anyone assist me, by providing a link to the appropriate files, so that I can put them on to a USB memory stick and get Debian on to my laptop? Alternatively, advise on other Linux distro's installers which DO support the AR8151 would be appreciated. I would prefer to stick to the Debian family.
