So, install something newer than Debian stable, e.g.
http://cdimage.debian.org/debian/dists/testing/main/installer-amd64/current/...
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise/main/installer-amd64/current/...
USB key versions should be in the same tree under "hdd", with a .img extension.
And that has led me to the path, and I've started to walk it. :) I didn't go for either of those two, or the USB versions. Instead I went for http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest/amd64/iso-c... It detected both the AR8151 and my wifi NIC, and asked me where to get the non-free firmware for the WiFi NIC from. I have got Linux installed, and confirmed that I can still get in to Windows via Grub. At this moment in time (~21:40 WST) I only have the base install done. I will leave the GUI until tomorrow when I should be both able to spare more time and be a LOT less tired. So now the journey proceeds forward, back to using Linux as my primary OS (at least while I'm not at work...)
