I wasn't aware of that one - interesting. Perhaps too obvious to mention is /var/log/Xorg0.log, though that's for X server messages rather than session-related errors. My current system doesn't have this file; it has probably all been migrated to the Systemd journal. The more I use systemd (including the journal) the more comfortable I am with it. I know it has ts detractors on this list, so let's agree to differ.
