People whose job it is to deploy database systems really have no excuse if they aren't aware of major shifts in the field such as the emergence of MariaDB and other forks following Oracle's purchase of Sun.
Being aware of the changes does not mean necesarily being "well-informed" E.g. That's me at the moment, because my deployments are in the "just works" area, as Arjen describes. For the last years it was "good enough", my focus was somewhere else. It is sufficient time to lose track of some newer developments (e.g. the book on my shelf is a certification guide for MySQL 5.0, and it is around the knowledge I have, with few newer additions) In a few months time it will become more important to fine-tune a database system, and I am looking forward to do that, and am happy about information shared by people who "Have been there / Done that" :-) Thank you Peter
