Postgresql seems to have been undergoing more rapid development over the last few years and to have attracted a growing community. I don't know whether there is any direct connection between this and perceptions about Mysql though. (The above is based on articles that I've read at LWN and elsewhere; I don't use database management systems in any of my work.)

Sun bought Mysql, then Oracle bought Sun. Nevertheless, I would expect Oracle to have welcomed the strategic advantage of purchasing an emerging competitor in the database market. This move has likely strengthened their business opportunities in relation to Web application deployments and other areas where Mysql reportedly was (and remains) popular.
