I've replaced my home router with a little laptop, and it's working great.
Does anyone make an ADSL modem that can be run (and powered) via USB? Most have USB ports but I suspect can't use it as a power source. This would allow my internet connection to stay up during the power outages that get more frequent out here once fire season starts. How about a battery backed DC supply that replaces the normal plug pack? You might need to be proactive to make, might be not an off the shelf item. Basically, a slightly over rated plug pack to charge a battery pack, then some form of regulation to the voltage for the ADSL modem.
Not sure if this helps but my backup hard drive ($80 from dick smith a year ago) that lives on the desk somewhere, plugs in to the usb port and gets it's power from there I think it's only 3 volts, whether that's enough for a modem I do not know.. Roger
